Friendship is not a downgrade is just seeing things from a different perspective. :)
i guess u use "just friends" when u hope for more and it doesn't come out the way u want. from this pov u can say friendship is a downgrade of dating: u are pleased with what u get - friendship - when u actually what more - dating.

I had always thought of it as a generally accepted answer which describes two people who don't have sex - hence the criticism.
